Four Indian business schools have featured among the global leaders in the use of teaching cases, according to the Financial Times’ BizEd Impact analysis. IIM Bangalore leads the Indian institutes, ranking 11th globally in the teaching-case category.

SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) ranks 15th, followed by Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, at 18th and Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Ghaziabad, at 25th.

Which Indian B-Schools Feature In The FT Rankings?

The rankings highlight the reach of teaching cases developed by Indian business schools and their use in management classrooms worldwide.
Teaching cases present real business problems and ask students to analyse decisions related to strategy, finance, operations, leadership and public policy.

How Does The FT Measure Business School Impact?

The Financial Times assesses business-school research across four areas: publications in practitioner-focused journals, citations in public-policy documents, external research funding and the use of teaching cases in classrooms around the world. The framework looks at how academic work reaches people beyond research journals and academic citations. However, Indian institutions’ performance in the teaching-case category is separate from their rankings in the other three areas.

Global B-Schools Lead In Other Research Categories

In practitioner-focused publications, Switzerland’s IMD, the Netherlands’ Tias and France’s Edhec are among the leading institutions.
For policy-related citations, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Columbia Business School and the University of Zurich feature among the top performers.

Wharton also ranks first in the category measuring research impact through external grants. It is followed by the University of St Gallen in Switzerland and the University of Zurich.

What Do Teaching Cases Mean For Indian B-Schools?

The results show that business-school research can reach companies, policymakers and students in different ways. Practitioner-focused publications can make research easier for corporate leaders to use, while policy citations can reflect links with government decision-making. Teaching cases bring business problems into the classroom.

For Indian institutions, the rankings offer one way to measure the international reach of their academic work. Cases based on Indian companies, entrepreneurs and public-sector initiatives can also help students abroad understand the country’s business environment and management challenges.

However, the use of a teaching case does not automatically mean that the research has changed how a company works or improved its business results. Similarly, policy citations and research funding indicate engagement but do not, on their own, prove a wider impact.

The FT framework provides a broader way to assess business-school research while distinguishing its reach from proven changes in business practices and public policy.
