Over 500 schools in Rajasthan have recorded low or no student attendance for 3 months, between July 1 to September 5. The lapse has made it difficult to decipher whether the students have been attending school or not. State Education Department, Rajasthan, has ordered district officers to ensure that daily attendance is recorded in schools and shared with the department. District education officers were appointed to overlook the operations and attendance data of government schools. They were instructed to ensure “100% entry of daily student attendance on the Shala Darpan portal across all government schools” in the state.
According to an official, consistent and regular attendance records are important for state level monitoring, reviews and data availability on Vidya Samiksha Kendra portal, which was established in 2024 to track student attendance in real time and identify the gaps to improve student education in the state. The intent is to decrease dropout rate and seasonal absence from classes.
School heads will be accountable if they fail to submit the student attendance data on a daily basis. Also, they will be required to submit the reasons and the issue needs to be resolved. Schools and districts which record a high number of instances of non-submission are to be prioritized by district education officers.

July to September is a peak agricultural labor season in Rajasthan, and is a known pattern of family migration for farm and construction work in tribal belts. So, to prevent dropouts and seasonal absences, resource gaps in schools and monitor participation, recording student attendance has become important for the Education department.
Hence, daily entries on the Shala Darpan portal have become mandatory in schools to maintain transparent administrative tracking. Consistent tracking and recording of attendance will encourage student discipline, punctuality and sustained engagement with school curriculum.
