Agartala Government Medical College Secures Centre's Approval for 100 Additional MBBS Seats

In a latest development, the Chief Minister of Tripura Manik Saha has declared the approval by Centre of additional 150 to 250 seats for MBBS programmes in Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) for the academic session 2026-27. With the addition of 100 seats, the total count of MBBS seats has risen from 400 to 500. 

The increase aims to provide greater opportunities for students studying MBBS and strengthen the medical education and healthcare ecosystem of the state. The medical college operates from the premises of state's premier healthcare institution, Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital.

CM Saha expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J P Nadda for their support in strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the state. The official post on X reads, “Heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji and Hon’ble Union Health Minister Shri @JPNadda Ji for their continued support in strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Tripura.”

With the development, AGMC, according to the post, has now joined the league of premier Medical Colleges in the country like Maulana Azad Medical College (New Delhi), B. J. Medical College (Ahmedabad, Gujarat), Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (Karnataka), SMS Medical College (Jaipur, Rajasthan), Madras Medical College (Chennai, Tamil Nadu), King George's Medical University (Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh) etc which have intake capacity of 250 MBBS seats, maximum permissible by National Medical Commission (NMC).

"A stronger medical education system today will build a healthier Tripura tomorrow," the post further read. The CM has added that another private medical college with an intake capacity of 100 students for MBBS is in the pipeline in Dhalai district in Tripura.
