Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will hold its students’ union elections on November 5, 2026, after an eight-year gap. The university announced the date on Friday following talks with students who had been protesting for 20 days.
Vote counting will begin at 7 pm on the same day. The announcement brought an end to the protest, during which students had demanded elections and the removal of Proctor Professor Mohammad Naveed Khan. Soon after the decision was announced, students burst firecrackers, took out victory processions and raised slogans on campus.
AMU Students’ Protest Ends After Election Announcement
The protest began on September 21 after students said the university administration had failed to give them an assurance on holding students’ union elections. Postgraduate student Yasir Fahad went on a hunger strike, and more students later joined the protest.
Former students also visited the campus to express their support, while several rounds of discussions took place between the university administration and student representatives.
Abu Maaz, a postgraduate student who was among those leading the protest, said the students had decided to end their agitation after the election announcement and the removal of the proctor. Yasir Fahad also ended his hunger strike after Vice-Chancellor Professor Naima Khatoon visited the protest site and offered him a glass of juice.
AMU Removes Proctor, Appoints New Officer
The university replaced Professor Mohammad Naveed Khan as proctor with Professor Nafees Ahmad Ansari, chairperson of the Department of Political Science.
Explaining the demand for the proctor’s removal, Maaz said the protesting students were dissatisfied with Khan’s functioning. He alleged that the proctor often acted against students’ interests and used different methods to pressure them into ending the protest. The allegations were made by the protesting students.
AMU Students’ Union Election Schedule 2026
In a press note, the university announced the appointments of election officials for the upcoming polls. Professor Javaid Talib of the Department of Law has been appointed chief election officer for the AMU Students’ Union (AMUSU) elections. Professor Nazia Hasan of the Department of English at Women’s College will oversee the elections to the Undergraduate Students’ Union of Women’s College.
The last date for filing nomination papers at the AMUSU office is October 29. The November 5 election will mark the return of students’ union polls at AMU after eight years. The decision followed sustained protests and negotiations between the university administration and student representatives.
