Arunachal Pradesh is set to expand its medical education infrastructure with two more medical colleges, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said on Sunday. The announcement comes as the state continues to increase opportunities for students seeking medical education within the state.

According to the Chief Minister, the state is preparing to establish a second medical college at Namsai, with construction expected to begin shortly. Another medical college is planned in the West Kameng-Tawang region and is expected to have an intake capacity of around 150 students.

The proposed West Kameng-Tawang medical college is being planned under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, under which government and private entities work together on a project. Khandu said an investor delegation from Delhi was scheduled to visit the proposed site and discuss the project with the concerned department.

TRIHMS MBBS Seats Increased To 100

The state has also expanded undergraduate medical education at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS). Khandu said the institute's MBBS intake has doubled from its initial 50 seats to 100 seats over the past two years.

The Arunachal Pradesh Health Department has confirmed that TRIHMS was permitted to admit 100 MBBS students from the 2024-25 academic session. The institute is currently the state's key medical education institution.

Medical Education Expansion In Arunachal Pradesh

The expansion is expected to increase access to medical education and strengthen the state's healthcare workforce. Earlier, the state had initiated work on establishing a medical college at Namsai, with the proposed institution expected to offer 100 MBBS seats.

Khandu also said the government is working to strengthen healthcare infrastructure. The Ramakrishna Mission Hospital in Itanagar is set for a 200-bed expansion, which is expected to add to healthcare capacity in the state.

The developments come as Arunachal Pradesh seeks to expand both medical education and healthcare services, particularly for students and residents who otherwise may have to travel outside the state for education or advanced medical treatment.
