Medical students of Government Medical College Jagtial have started an indefinite peaceful protest from Wednesday October 7. The students want immediate action on long pending infrastructure and basic facility problems at the college. They say their studies and their daily life are both suffering because of these delays. The protest is peaceful and the students plan to continue it until the authorities respond.
Why GMC Jagtial Medical Students Are Protesting
The students say the permanent college building and hostels are still incomplete almost four years after the foundation stone was laid. They claim their classes are held in temporary structures. Laboratory accommodation and other facilities are not enough and this hurts their academic and residential life. Five batches of medical students will soon share just three makeshift lecture halls and three laboratories. Hostel rooms are badly crowded and six to eight students are adjusted in some rooms. Female students also lack adequate reading room facilities because of space constraints.
FAIMA Support and the Main Demands
FAIMA has extended full support to the GMC Jagtial students. It said medical students deserve classrooms, labs and hostels and not compromises. It also said these facilities are minimum requirements for quality medical education and they are not privileges. The students say the college has no dedicated buses. This blocks their family adoption programme postings, their rural and urban health training centre postings and their community medical camps. They call this a violation of National Medical Commission rules. Their demands include furnished hostels by the end of October 2026 and a working academic block by December. They also want fully equipped laboratories dedicated to college transport and better internal roads drainage and sports facilities. The students approached the Jagtial MLA, the District Collector, the Roads and Buildings Department and the construction contractors over the past two and a half years. They say their concerns are still unresolved. FAIMA has asked the authorities to act without further delay and it reminded them that quality medical education cannot be built on weak infrastructure.
