IIT Bombay May Put One-Semester Suspension Rule On Hold; Check New Exam Malpractice Rules

IIT Bombay may put its one-semester suspension rule for examination malpractice on hold and reconsider its disciplinary framework after a committee reviewed the existing procedure.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) may put its current rule of imposing a one-semester academic suspension for certain examination malpractices on hold. The matter is expected to be discussed at a special emergency meeting of the institute’s Senate.

The review comes after the institute formed a committee to examine its examination misconduct procedure following the September 18 death of a second-year student. The incident had also led to student protests and concerns over how cases of alleged examination malpractice are handled.

IIT Bombay Exam Malpractice Rules Under Review

Under the disciplinary framework introduced in 2026, students found using or possessing unauthorised material or electronic devices during an examination can face an FR2 grade and a one-semester academic suspension.

The rules cover items and practices such as chits, mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches, smart glasses and other unauthorised material. Repeat cases can also attract a minimum one-semester suspension.

The proposed review could change how these penalties are applied, particularly in cases where the nature and seriousness of the violation differ.

IIT Bombay May Bring Back 2015 Exam Rules

One proposal under discussion is to return to elements of the institute’s 2015 examination malpractice guidelines. Under those rules, suspension was not automatically imposed in every case of copying.

Suspension was generally reserved for more serious situations, including mass copying, repeat violations and impersonation, with the punishment determined according to the nature of the offence. The earlier process also involved examining the evidence before taking disciplinary action.

New Process For Handling Exam Misconduct

The committee reviewing the rules has also suggested a clearer process for dealing with suspected academic misconduct. This could involve the student’s mentor, head of department and other officials before a final disciplinary decision is taken.

The review is also expected to focus on providing clear, step-by-step instructions to invigilators and ensuring that students have an opportunity to explain their side before major academic penalties are imposed.

The final decision will depend on the Senate’s discussion. Until then, the existing examination disciplinary framework remains the subject of review.
