An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi PhD scholar died while undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on October 3.

Police said a case of abetment of suicide has been registered under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Kishangarh police station.

According to a police statement issued on October 4, the scholar had been receiving treatment at the hospital since August 18 after he was found unconscious and injured at his rented accommodation in south Delhi’s Munirka village.

FIR Registered Following Supreme Court Direction

The scholar was found unconscious inside his rented accommodation, which was locked from the inside and had to be opened by neighbours. Police subsequently shifted him to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.

“The door of the house was also locked from inside and the same was broken open by neighbours. The victim was immediately shifted to AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment by police. He remained under treatment for more than 45 days and expired at AIIMS (Trauma Centre) on October 3. The FIR has been registered pursuant to the directions of the Supreme Court and on the basis of a complaint received from the Security Officer, IIT Delhi,” the Southwest district police said in its statement.

The circumstances surrounding the scholar’s death are yet to be fully established. Police have registered the case under the abetment of suicide provision, following the incident at his rented accommodation and his subsequent death after more than 45 days of treatment.

Police Clarifies Incident Did Not Take Place On IIT Delhi Campus

The police clarified that the incident did not take place inside the IIT Delhi campus. It also stated that the scholar’s family has not made any allegation against any individual.

“During the proceedings, no suspicion or allegation was raised against any person by the family or witnesses as the injured was alone in the house, which is also evident from the CCTV footage of the camera installed outside the house,” the statement added.

Third Reported IIT Delhi-Linked Student Death In 2026

Two other student deaths involving IIT Delhi had been reported earlier in 2026, one in March and another in August.

In March, a 19-year-old first-year BTech student died allegedly by suicide in his room inside the IIT Delhi campus. Police had said that no suicide note was recovered.

Later, on August 22, a 31-year-old MSc Physics student died after allegedly falling from the sixth floor of the Lecture Hall Complex (LHC) on the IIT Delhi campus.
