Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen academic and research collaboration between the two institutions. The agreement was signed on September 29 at the IIT Madras campus.
The partnership will cover areas of mutual academic and research interest and provide opportunities for students and faculty members from both institutions to work together. It will also support joint seminars, workshops and other academic meetings.
BITS Pilani, IIT Madras Student Exchange Programme
A key part of the MoU is the student exchange programme. Under the arrangement, students from BITS Pilani and IIT Madras will be able to spend time at the partner institution for academic coursework, research activities and project work.
Students selected for the programme will be designated as special exchange students. They can take courses at the partner institution either for academic credit or on an audit basis. However, participation will depend on approval from the concerned faculty members or project supervisors and fulfilment of the required academic prerequisites.

The exchange programme also includes a tuition-fee waiver at the host institution. This means students participating in the exchange will not have to pay tuition fees to the institution they visit under the programme.
The academic work completed during the exchange will also count towards the students’ studies at their home institutions. Credits and grades earned during the programme will be considered based on the academic report issued by the host institution.
Joint Research And Faculty Exchange
The five-year agreement also provides for faculty exchange and sharing of academic and scholarly information, materials and publications. The two institutions will jointly organise seminars, workshops and other academic events to encourage interaction among their academic communities.
BITS Pilani Group Vice Chancellor V Ramgopal Rao said the collaboration would create opportunities for student mobility, joint research and faculty engagement. IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti said the institutions would work across areas including critical and emerging technologies and wellness initiatives.
The partnership is expected to give students and faculty members a structured opportunity to access academic expertise, research facilities and project opportunities at the partner institution.
