The latest figures show that female participation and success have both expanded considerably. Women registrations increased from 29,983 in 2016 to 43,112 in 2026, while the number of qualifiers rose from 4,570 to 10,107. This means the number of women qualifying has grown by more than 120 per cent over the decade.

The rise in female representation is also reflected in IIT admissions. The institutes introduced 800 supernumerary seats for women in 2018, when women accounted for 15.34 per cent of admitted students, exceeding the 14 per cent target. The proportion has continued to remain around the 20 per cent mark in recent years.

In 2026, IITs allotted 3,814 female-only seats, while 37 women secured admission through the gender-neutral pool. As a result, women accounted for 20.22 per cent of the 18,861 admissions this year. The figures indicate that female representation in IIT admissions has remained substantially higher than it was before the introduction of supernumerary seats.
