Students in government and aided schools across Karnataka sat for their SA-1 or mid-term examinations without knowing the subjects. Their teachers were on SIR duty for the last three months. No classes were held during this time. As per the schedule released by the department of school education and literacy the mid-term exams concluded on September 30, 2026. Schools will remain closed for the Dasara vacation from October 3 to 21, 2026. Scroll for more details.
Why Students Entered Examination Halls Without Lessons
Teachers were pulled away for SIR work for almost three months so classrooms stayed empty. A headmistress of a government high school who is deputed for SIR work in Raja Rajeshwari Nagar in Bengaluru West called this an injustice to students. She said at least high school teachers should have been exempted because SSLC is crucial. She also shared that a few of her students pleaded with her to return to school after the SA-1 time tables were announced.
Blank Papers And A Demand For A Fresh Exam
Students said they were blank when they received the question papers. One student said the English and Mathematics exams left them completely blank as no classes were conducted. Another student could answer only a few questions because those were linked to the previous year syllabus. A student from an aided high school listened to online classes by independent teachers on YouTube. She said they went to school just for attendance and the videos helped her a bit in the exams. One parent said her daughter skipped the exams as the school held no classes. Since she is in class 10 the parents arranged private tuition for the holidays. She said the fees are hard to pay but there is no option because her daughter wants a good PU college.
Students have asked schools to conduct the assessment again in December once teachers are back and to consider those scores. Some schools engaged guest teachers to hold classes.
D Shashi Kumar who is general secretary of the Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka called this a grave injustice to students. He said the government should have hired more guest teachers. He warned that completing the entire portion after Dasara will burden students and impact the 2027 SSLC results.
This year the SA-1 SSLC question papers were prepared by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board or KSEAB. They were set in the SSLC preparatory examination format and uploaded to the school login. This step was taken to help students assess how prepared they are for the board exams.
