A large number of students have left Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, and returned to their hometowns after violent unrest erupted on campus. The university has suspended regular classes for 10 days, while heavy police deployment remains in place across the campus.
The unrest broke out on Sunday after demonstrations linked to allegations concerning a female student. The situation later escalated, with reports of vandalism, arson and damage to university property. Police vehicles were also attacked and parts of campus buildings were set on fire, according to media reports.
LPU Students Leave For Their Hometowns
Following the violence, several students decided to leave the university campus and return home. A large number of students left the campus after the university announced the 10-day suspension of classes.
Visuals from the campus showed students carrying their luggage as they prepared to leave for their hometowns. The university has also postponed mid-term examinations until further notice.
Students cited safety concerns following the unrest. One student told news agency ANI that students were worried about the possibility of people entering hostel areas and said they planned to return once the situation improved.
Another student said the university had informed them about damage to buildings on campus and that students were uncertain about whether normal classes would resume after the 10-day break.

Heavy Police Deployment On Campus
A significant police presence has been maintained at LPU, with personnel from 10 districts deployed across the university campus. Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav and Special DGP (Law and Order) PK Sinha also inspected security arrangements on Monday.
Police said internet services within a 3-km radius of the campus had been suspended to prevent the spread of unverified reports and rumours. The university campus, spread across around 600 acres, has been placed under heightened security, with academic and hostel blocks being secured by police personnel.
LPU Classes Suspended, Exams Postponed
LPU has suspended regular classes for 10 days from Monday and postponed its mid-term examinations until further notice. The move comes after parts of the campus were damaged during the unrest.
The university administration, civil authorities and police held a meeting with student representatives following the incident. According to LPU Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh Sandhu, student representatives said the unrest was primarily linked to outsiders allegedly entering the campus. A special investigation team has also been constituted by the Jalandhar deputy inspector general to investigate the incident.
For now, students who have left for their hometowns are expected to remain away from campus during the 10-day suspension, while the university and authorities assess the situation and security arrangements.
