Jadavpur University To Launch Green Hydrogen Centre; Check What Students Need To Know
Jadavpur University has received approval to establish a Centre of Excellence for green hydrogen research with DVC, SAIL and HURL as industry partners. The project will focus on developing technologies for the power, steel and fertiliser sectors.

Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata will establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for green hydrogen research and development in collaboration with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL).
The proposal has been approved by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The project has a total budget of Rs 8.18 crore and aims to develop indigenous technologies that can support the use of green hydrogen in key industries.
The proposal is among only four selected by the ministry to establish Centres of Excellence in the green hydrogen sector, according to a university spokesperson. The centre is scheduled to be inaugurated on September 30 at Technology Bhavan on the university campus.
What Will Jadavpur University's Green Hydrogen Centre Do?
The centre will focus on research and technology development to expand the use of green hydrogen in industries such as power generation, steel manufacturing and fertiliser production.
According to Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya, the project will also explore more efficient ways to compress hydrogen, making it easier to store and use for different applications.
Green hydrogen is produced using renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. It is being explored as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels in sectors where reducing emissions can be challenging.

How Will The Project Be Funded?
The total project budget of Rs 8.18 crore will be funded equally by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Damodar Valley Corporation. Jadavpur University will serve as the knowledge partner, taking responsibility for research and technology development. SAIL and HURL will help test and apply the technologies at their respective industrial facilities.
The collaboration will bring together academic research and industry-level testing, helping researchers examine how new technologies perform in practical industrial settings.
Link With India's National Green Hydrogen Mission
The centre will support the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to establish India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, use and export while reducing dependence on imported energy.
The project also reflects the role universities can play in developing technologies for emerging industries. Its progress will depend on how successfully the research can be tested and adapted for use in industrial operations.
