Meghalaya New Polytechnics: According to Meghalaya’s Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, three more polytechnics are to be started shortly in order to broaden the scope of technical and vocational education in the state. Addressing as chief guest at the concluding function of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Shillong Polytechnic (1965-2026) themed “Vocationalizing the Future,” he stressed on the necessity of aligning the technical syllabus according to changing industrial technologies.
He called for setting up of partnerships between academic institutions and industries, renewable energy organisations and local manufacturing firms to allow students exposure to practical aspects related to electric vehicles, solar energy, and wind energy technologies. Mentioning that Shillong Polytechnic has a glorious tradition of producing over 10,000 diploma engineers during its six decades of existence, the Minister said that establishment of three more polytechnics along with four functioning polytechnics in the state will immensely help in improving the accessibility of technical education for the young people of Meghalaya across all districts. A special souvenir “Diamond Jubilee Celebrations: Shillong Polytechnic 1965-2026” has also been launched on this occasion.

Technical Institutions Expansion: The Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui, informed that presently, there are four polytechnics in the state of Meghalaya and three more are going to open soon to increase accessibility across the state.
Need for Partnership with Industries: The Minister called for educational institutions to partner with industries to ensure that technical training is in line with the skill set needed by the students to remain employed.
Constraints of Government Resources: The Minister pointed out that the efforts of the government alone could not meet all the requirements for technical education and stressed the need for innovations and partnerships.
Need to Adapt to New Technologies: The officials stressed on the need to innovate curriculums for technical education to provide hands-on training to students in emerging fields such as electric cars, solar energy, and wind energy.
Foundation of Technical Education: The officials acknowledged Shillong Polytechnic at the time of its diamond jubilee for providing more than 10,000 graduates engineers since 1965, and declared it the foundation stone of regional technical education.
Publication Release: At the end of the event, the officials launched a souvenir book titled “Diamond Jubilee Celebration: Shillong Polytechnic 1965-2026.”
