NIT Patna PhD Admission 2026: Eligibility Criteria
Candidates applying for the PhD programme must meet the academic requirements prescribed by the institute. Those holding an MTech, ME or equivalent degree should have secured at least 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale or 60% marks in aggregate from a recognised technical institute or university.
Candidates with a BTech, BE, MCA or equivalent qualification must have first-class marks. Where an institution does not award classes, candidates should have at least 60% marks or a 6.5 CGPA, along with a valid GATE, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET score. This criterion applies to candidates from the Computer Science and Engineering branch.
The minimum marks or CGPA requirement is relaxed by 5 percentage points or 0.5 CGPA for candidates belonging to the SC, ST and PwD categories. Applicants are required to provide proof of a valid GATE, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET score while applying. Sponsored candidates are exempt from the GATE or NET qualification requirement.
NIT Patna PhD Selection Process
Admission will involve screening based on the prescribed eligibility criteria, followed by a screening test and/or selection interview conducted by the concerned department or centre.
The screening test will carry 100 marks. General, EWS and OBC candidates need to score at least 40%, while the qualifying mark for SC, ST and PwD candidates is 35%. The test syllabus will be based on the GATE or NET syllabus for the respective discipline.
Candidates shortlisted through the screening test will appear for a 100-mark interview. Part-time candidates may be called directly for the interview. The interview will assess subject knowledge, research aptitude and understanding of the proposed research area.
The final merit list will be prepared based on interview performance and seat availability. NIT Patna will publish the list of selected candidates on its official website.
