Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasised the importance of Sanskrit and Vedic mathematics in school education, saying students should be able to learn traditional knowledge alongside modern science and technology. He was speaking at the Shri Guru Parv Mahamahotsav and Sant Sammelan in Ayodhya.
Singh said education plays an important role in shaping a civilisation and described Sanskrit as a language connected with India's knowledge traditions. He said students should not only understand Sanskrit verses but also develop an understanding of modern subjects and technologies.
Vedic Mathematics To Be Made Compulsory In UP Schools?
During his address, Singh said he would appeal to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to make Vedic mathematics compulsory for students across the state if Adityanath forms the government again. The statement comes ahead of the Uttar Pradesh electoral cycle.
Singh also recalled his tenure as Uttar Pradesh Education Minister, saying he had introduced Vedic mathematics during that period. He further said that Sanskrit had earlier been made part of the examination system during his tenure, but the practice was subsequently removed by later governments.

Students Should Learn Sanskrit And Modern Science
Singh argued that traditional learning should not be viewed as separate from modern education. He said students should be able to understand Sanskrit shlokas as well as computer code, highlighting the need to combine India's traditional knowledge systems with contemporary scientific and technological learning.
He also said being modern should not simply mean speaking English, but having the ability to understand new challenges and find solutions to problems of the present.
Sanskrit Education And New Learning Centre In Ayodhya
The Defence Minister was speaking at an event held at the Udasin Ashram in Ranopali, Ayodhya, where he also inspected the newly constructed building of Shri Narayan Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya. The building was not formally inaugurated because the Model Code of Conduct was in force for the ongoing elections, according to media reports.
Singh said the new institution could develop into an important centre for Sanskrit education while connecting traditional learning with modern education.
