Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria has urged universities to expand the use of Artificial Intelligence across higher education, research and innovation. Speaking at a vice chancellors conference on Artificial Intelligence and Higher Education at Punjab Lok Bhavan in Chandigarh on Saturday he said AI is reshaping learning work, research and decision making. Gulab Chand Kataria Calls for AI Across Academic Disciplines
Kataria said AI education should not remain limited to engineering and computer science programmes. Universities should encourage multidisciplinary learning by introducing AI across medicine, agriculture, law, finance, languages and social sciences. He also called for AI based solutions to address challenges related to agriculture, healthcare, water, conservation governance and environmental protection.
He highlighted the need for more AI laboratories, bridges, courses, certification programmes, reskilling initiatives and practical learning opportunities. He also referred to national efforts such as the National Education Policy 2020 IndiaAI Mission BharatGen Anusandhan National Research Foundation and One Nation One Subscription.
Universities Urged to Address AI Risks and Build Responsible Skills
While encouraging wider AI adoption Kataria also raised concerns linked to data privacy, cybersecurity, deepfakes, misinformation, transparency and accountability. He said students should learn not only what AI can do but also when and how the technology should be used responsibly.
Kataria said universities have an important role in becoming centres of Knowledge, innovation and nation building. He linked their contribution to preparing young people for a technology driven future and supporting India’s broader development goals including the vision of a developed India by 2047.
