The 18th BRICS summit was held in New Delhi, India from 12th to 13th September 2026 and the summit resulted in the New Delhi declaration having the theme of “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The declaration elaborates on the idea of collective ideas of BRICS nations on global order that is more inclusive, better multilateral institutions, better sustainable development, and better involvement of developing countries in international decision making process.

What is the BRICS New Delhi Declaration 2026?

The New Delhi Declaration is the official statement of the 18th BRICS Summit. It was drafted by the heads of state of the BRICS states and contains provisions related to world governance, economic cooperation, peace and security, sustainable development, innovation, and relations among the populations of different nations. 

The declaration is particularly relevant given that developing countries are demanding more influence in the establishment of global strategies and institutions.

1. Call for Global Governance Reforms

The message of the declaration is the idea of reforming the international institutions. The leaders of BRICS expressed the necessity of establishing a more representative, democratic and efficient system of international governance that correlates with the reality of the current times and not just the geopolitical configuration of the post-second World War period.

2. Support for UN Reforms

The declaration once again stressed the importance of reforming the UN, especially the UN Security Council in order to provide more representation for developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. This is one of the main priorities of such countries as India and Brazil. 

3. Strengthening the Voice of the Global South

The heads of BRICS countries emphasized the rising significance of the southern states in international issues. The declaration emphasizes the need for more involvement of developing and emerging nations in global governing and global decision-making. 

4. Commitment to Multilateralism

The declaration confirmed the support of BRICS countries for the United Nations Charter, international law, and peaceful dispute resolution. BRICS officials underscored the importance of diplomacy, dialogue and cooperation in solving global problems. 

5. Condemnation of Terrorism

The leaders condemned terrorism in all of its kinds and urged for a higher level of cooperation among countries to overcome terrorist organizations, financial support for them, and any activities connected with extremists. 

6. Economic and Financial Cooperation

The countries forming BRICS agreed to work together in the field of economic cooperation, with local currencies being used for trade and investment purposes. The declaration also proposes strengthening the New Development Bank (NDB) and other financial institutions. 

7. Focus on Innovation and Technology

According to the declaration, the importance of collaboration in terms of advancements in technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and in the development of digital infrastructure, innovations, and qualification improvements is emphasised.
