Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have developed a bird-inspired morphing skin that can prevent aircraft stalls in real time. The adaptive external skin reshapes itself during flight to keep airflow attached to the wing. This boosts lift and reduces drag. It also improves safety and fuel efficiency. How the Morphing Skin Stops an Aerodynamic Stall

An aerodynamic stall happens when airflow separates from a wing. The wing loses lift suddenly and drag increases. The aircraft cannot generate enough lift to support its own weight so it begins to drop. The wing assembly attachment tilts itself to a safe degree as airflow starts to detach. It aligns with the flow and stabilises the aircraft even at higher tilt angles. The system combines predictive computational models with real wind tunnel validation. Macro Fibre Composite strips sense and actuate shape changes in real time. This gives pilots extra control in turbulence near birds or under mechanical disturbances. Dr Mukherjee works as an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering at IIT Madras. He said birds rarely stall even though aircraft are inspired by them. The team closed that gap using smart materials and engineering.

Applications for Commercial Flights and Drones

Commercial aviation could see safer take-offs and landings especially on short or busy runways. The technology helps aircraft operate across a wider range of flight conditions. Enhanced lift with limited drag means fuel savings and lower emissions. The concept was tested on a 3D wing with a NACA 4415 airfoil and avoids heavy actuators. That suits UAVs and drones where weight and energy constraints matter. Adaptive wings could boost endurance and manoeuvrability while improving payload efficiency. Defence aircraft could gain improved control during extreme manoeuvres and combat scenarios. This could enhance survivability and mission performance. The simple add-on design allows retrofitting existing aircraft without redesigning whole wings. The research is more than 20 years old and has been validated and patented. The team says it is ready to implement the skin on real aircraft. The findings were published in the European Journal of Mechanics.
