It was, however, a one-time event and failed to become an annual holiday.

Second Event: Who is the Real Founder of Father’s Day?

The Real Founder of Father’s Day is Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington. Her father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and raised six children alone after his wife passed away in childbirth. Her father was greatly loved and revered by Sonora.

In 1909, while listening to a church sermon about Mother's Day at Central Methodist Episcopal Church in Spokane, Sonora felt that fathers also deserved a special day of honour. She spoke to her pastor and asked that a similar day be set aside for fathers.

With the help of the YMCA and local church leaders, the first official Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. 

The date was originally planned for June 5, which was William Smart's birth month, but was later changed to June 19, the third Sunday of June, to give clergy enough time to prepare.

As noted in an official White House proclamation from 1993 (Clinton White House Archives), 'Traditionally, the third Sunday in June is nationally designated as Father's Day.'
