Andhra Pradesh Minister for Information Technology, Electronics and Communications Lokesh Nara, in his recent social media post, has confirmed school holidays in five districts in view of heavy rains forecast. The school holiday has been announced by the district administration for today, September 23, 2026.
As per the announcement, schools in ASR, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts will remain closed due to heavy rainfall and a cyclone warning in the district. The India Meteorological Department warned that the cyclone could intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours.
As per media reports, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam are among the worst-affected areas, with moderate to heavy rain reported across several parts of North Andhra Pradesh. Cases of waterlogging have also been reported on roads in major cities. District Education Officers of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam have reportedly announced school holidays following directions from the respective district collectors in view of the worsening weather conditions and the safety of students.
As per media reports, authorities in other North Andhra Pradesh districts are monitoring the situation, and collectors from Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle, Parvathipuram Manyam and Alluri Sitarama Raju districts are reviewing the situation regularly. Reports suggest that if rainfall becomes intense, school holidays will be announced in additional districts. Further decisions will be taken as per the local conditions, particularly in areas that could experience flooding or transport disruptions.
Cyclone Storm Warning in North Andhra Pradesh
As per reports, the meteorological department has forecast a severe cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours in North Andhra Pradesh. The cyclone is expected to cross North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur between September 23 and 24, as per reports. Warnings of heavy rainfall have been issued in parts of the region for both days. A flash flood alert has also been issued for Vizianagaram, Manyam, Alluri, Visakhapatnam and Anakapalle districts, while people living near river basins and areas prone to floods have been advised to remain alert and follow instructions issued by local authorities. Coastal Andhra and Yanam region is also likely to experience adverse weather conditions in the coming days.
