Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani has appointed Mohan Krishnamoorthy as director of its new Amaravati campus from January 2027. He will lead the campus development including its academic research and industry ecosystem. The focus will be on computer science, artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies. Who is Mohan Krishnamoorthy
He is currently the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor (India Engagement) at RMIT University. He is also the director of Industry Research and Interactive Learning Solutions (IRIS) at BITS Pilani. He is a professor of operations research. He holds a PhD from Imperial College London. His experience covers higher education leadership international partnerships research industry engagement and institutional development. He was the founding CEO of the IIT Bombay–Monash Research Academy where he helped build the research and institutional ecosystem. He later initiated the UQ–IIT Delhi Research Academy. He also contributed to India-Australia research collaborations.
Krishnamoorthy said being the founding director was both a privilege and a responsibility. He said building a campus from the ground up offers a rare chance to shape its culture and ambitions from the very start. He said the real excitement lies in creating an environment where young people can think boldly and tackle consequential problems. He added that they should use AI and technology to make a meaningful difference to industry, government and society. He said he feels fortunate to begin a journey that can have a lasting impact on students' research innovation industry and the future of India.
Amaravati Campus Focus Areas and Leadership Support
As director Krishnamoorthy will build the academic and research ecosystem at the campus. According to BITS Pilani the campus will focus on artificial intelligence and data. It will also focus on robotics and advanced manufacturing. Other focus areas are digital transformation and life sciences and healthcare. The campus will also work on technologies addressing societal and environmental challenges. The institute said the campus will grow as a globally connected campus with a focus on emerging technologies and innovation. He will also build a vibrant academic and research community. He will establish connections with industry and global partners.
BITS Pilani Group Vice Chancellor V. Ramgopal Rao congratulated him. Rao said his experience in academic leadership research, industry engagement and international partnerships would be valuable for the new campus. He said his skill in creating new research and institutional ecosystems would be especially valuable. This would help shape BITS Pilani Amaravati into a distinctive campus with a strong focus on emerging technologies innovation and entrepreneurship. He said they look forward to his leadership in building a vibrant research community and forging deep ties with industry and global partners.
