Gujarat FMG Stipend 2026: The Gujarat government has announced a monthly stipend of Rs 21,840 for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) undergoing their mandatory internship at government and GMERS medical colleges in the state. The decision brings foreign medical graduates at par with other MBBS interns receiving the state-prescribed stipend.

As per the announcement, foreign medical graduates who have completed their MBBS from medical institutions outside India and are currently undergoing their mandatory internship at government and GMERS medical colleges in Gujarat will be eligible for the monthly stipend.

The benefit will apply to foreign medical graduates who were allotted internship postings through the Gujarat Medical Council between June 1 and October 1, 2026, in accordance with the applicable National Medical Commission (NMC) norms.

The decision will provide financial support to FMGs during their compulsory internship period and ensure that they receive the same stipend as other eligible MBBS interns in the state.

Foreign Medical Graduates Internship: Why Is It Mandatory?

Under the NMC framework, medical graduates who complete their MBBS education from institutions outside India are required to undergo a one-year compulsory internship in India before becoming eligible to practise medicine in the country.

The internship, also referred to as Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI), is an important requirement for foreign medical graduates seeking registration and the right to practise medicine in India.

The issue of stipends for FMG interns has been under discussion at the national level. The Union Health Ministry has clarified that stipend payments for medical interns, including FMGs, are determined and disbursed by the respective state governments or universities, as applicable.
