The Ministry of Education has approved five new Centres of Excellence for classical language studies in India. The centres will focus on Classical Assamese Classical Bengali Classical Marathi Classical Pali and Classical Prakrit. An office memorandum issued by the ministry on October 1 confirmed this approval. It was signed by Shreyansh Mohan, Deputy Secretary to the Government of India and addressed to the Vice Chancellors of the concerned universities and heads of the institutions.
Where These Five Centres Will Come Up
The five centres will be set up at reputed institutions across five states. Tezpur University in Assam will host the centre for Classical Assamese. Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal will look after Classical Bengali. The Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute which is a deemed university in Pune Maharashtra will handle Classical Marathi. The Central University of Odisha at Sunabeda will house the centre for Classical Pali while the Central University of Gujarat at Kundhela in Vadodara Gujarat will run the centre for Classical Prakrit. These centres will strengthen academic research and promote digitisation preservation and dissemination of the heritage of these languages. Scholars and students will get better facilities to study old Indian texts. The focus on digitisation also means rare manuscripts and texts can be saved for future generations. This step gives a big push to the study and promotion of the rich languages of India.
Odisha Chief Minister Calls It a Proud Moment
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed the development and described it as a proud moment for the state. He called it a significant step towards preserving the rich linguistic heritage of India. In his post on X he said the Centre of Excellence for Classical Pali will strengthen the study preservation and promotion of Pali. He described Pali as a language deeply connected with the intellectual, spiritual and cultural traditions of India. He added that this centre will further strengthen the contribution of Odisha in preserving the civilisational knowledge and linguistic heritage of the country. He also congratulated the Central University of Odisha and everyone associated with this important initiative. The new centres are expected to help more people access this knowledge and celebrate the linguistic treasures of the nation.
