School students will now learn how businesses are born. NCERT has launched a new Social Science textbook with a full chapter on startups and entrepreneurship. The chapter explains how to spot a business opportunity and how to understand a market. It also teaches students how to write a workable business plan. The idea is to make young minds think like founders from an early age. Scroll for further details.

How the Chapter Is Built and What It Teaches

The chapter is organised around three big questions. First it asks how entrepreneurship shapes society and the economy. Second, it explains the main functional areas of any business. Third, it shows how an effective business plan is actually made. Together these questions give students a complete picture of running a venture.

The textbook also connects the lessons to India’s own startup journey. The country had only around 350 to 400 startups about ten years ago. Today the ecosystem has grown to nearly 2.3 lakh enterprises. This growth has placed India at the number three position globally. The wider policy push wants to bring research and industry together with startups and entrepreneurship on one common platform.Students also learn the basic building blocks of doing business. These include understanding market activity and identifying opportunities. They also cover gauging performance and planning carefully before committing resources. The chapter even explains how Artificial Intelligence can help with market analysis and better decision making in businesses.

Real Stories That Make It Relatable

The textbook uses stories of Indian entrepreneurs so the subject feels relatable. One story is of Mohan Singh Oberoi who was born in Punjab in 1898. He started his career working for a wage of just Rs 50. He later mortgaged his wife’s jewellery to buy his first hotel. From there he built a hotel business and became a trailblazer of the Indian hospitality industry.

Another example is Lijjat Papad. Seven homemakers living in a Mumbai chawl started making papads with borrowed ingredients and a time honoured recipe. Each woman took dough home in the morning. She rolled papads while also managing her household duties. The finished products were returned by evening. The lesson highlights how quality and structure and sheer determination turned a small home activity into a well known brand. Together these lessons show students that big businesses often begin with small ideas and strong will.
