The University of Delhi (DU) has asked its colleges, departments and hostels to conduct safety assessments and submit detailed reports by October 12. The exercise aims to identify gaps in campus security, improve lighting and strengthen safety arrangements for women.
DU Proctor Manoj Singh issued a statement following an online meeting on Friday with college principals, deans, directors, heads of departments, hostel provosts, wardens and resident tutors. The meeting focused on safety and security across the university.
Explaining the purpose of the exercise, Singh said, “Delhi University has colleges and campuses spread across the city. The objective is to first collect data on where what can be improved, so we can give the report to the LG and CM, and accordingly action for campus and women safety can be taken,”
DU Colleges Asked to Check CCTV Cameras and Streetlights
Colleges and hostel authorities have been asked to identify blind spots, repair non-functional lights and install additional streetlights in areas with poor illumination. They must also ensure that CCTV cameras are positioned strategically to improve surveillance.
The university has directed officials to prune overgrown trees that block natural light and address other potential safety hazards. Authorities must submit detailed lists of women’s safety concerns and infrastructure issues in hard copy or digital format by 5 pm on October 12.
The statement also highlighted the need to address identified concerns promptly. It said, “This initiative aims to facilitate the prompt identification of these concerns and to address them systematically, fostering a safer environment for all members of the university community,”
More Pink Booths, Police Surveillance Proposed
The meeting also discussed increasing police presence near colleges and hostels, including deploying dedicated surveillance teams at strategic locations.
Representatives proposed installing additional pink booths for women and strengthening the operations of the Vamika police van, which is recognised for its rapid-response capabilities.
DU also plans to organise gender-sensitisation workshops in collaboration with the Delhi Police. A seven-day self-defence crash course for students is another measure discussed during the meeting.
The university has also directed that women’s safety helpline numbers 1091 and 112 be prominently displayed and communicated across college and campus premises.
DU to Review Building Conditions and Urgent Repairs
Apart from security arrangements, officials have been asked to assess the structural condition of university buildings, colleges and hostels in coordination with the Engineering Department.
Any infrastructure problems requiring urgent repairs must be reported so that the necessary action can be taken.
The university said the exercise is aimed at improving safety for students and staff by identifying concerns and addressing them systematically.
