The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is preparing to roll out several changes related to student wellness, hostel facilities and examinations following demands raised by students after the death of second-year BTech student Sahil Wakode.
The institute said several wellness-related measures are expected to be introduced this week, while other proposals are still awaiting student feedback or administrative approval. Students had sought changes in areas including welfare, counselling, disciplinary processes and decision-making mechanisms.
Associate Dean For Student Wellness Appointed
As part of the wellness measures, IIT Bombay has introduced a new position of Associate Dean for Student Wellness. Professor Deepak Marla has been appointed to the post.
The institute is also planning to appoint wellness secretaries at the hostel level. The proposed system is intended to provide students with easier access to support within their residential communities.
IIT Bombay is also examining its existing committee structures to identify areas where students can have greater representation. Discussions are underway to increase student participation at the department level.
The revamped wellness-support system is expected to be implemented in phases from this week. The existing Student Wellness Centre will continue to provide counselling, peer support and wellness programmes. The new measures are aimed at expanding and restructuring the existing support system.
Hostel And Mess Changes Planned
Several hostel-related measures are also being considered. Student representatives, sports councillors and wardens will identify suitable spaces for play areas within hostels.
The institute has also tested different options for replacing hostel fans and has shortlisted alternatives. Students will be asked for their feedback through a survey before the final option is selected.
Mess-related reforms are also in the pipeline. IIT Bombay has completed a student survey, and its findings will be considered while designing the revised system. The institute is now moving towards re-tendering and appointing caterers.
The revised flexi-mess model has also been prepared and is currently awaiting approval.
End-Semester Exam Schedule Under Review
IIT Bombay is also considering changes to the end-semester examination schedule. However, the proposed alternative timeline has not been finalised or implemented yet.
The examination schedule will therefore depend on the ongoing review and approval process. Overall, the reforms are expected to be introduced in phases, with some measures moving towards implementation while others remain subject to feedback and administrative decisions.
