India wants to find its next sporting champions right from the school playground. Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has launched the Physical Education Professionals Module on the National Sports Repository System portal in New Delhi. The new module aims to identify and nurture sporting talent at the grassroots level. It brings physical education teachers into the heart of India’s talent hunt because they are often the first to spot a gifted child in a school or college ground.
A National Repository of PE Teachers
The minister has called for a comprehensive nationwide repository of physical education teachers within a time bound framework. He directed that the entire repository be created within six months and reviewed regularly. This digital listing will map the qualifications and skills and specialisations of PE professionals so they can be used effectively across the country. It will also create opportunities for teachers with special talents to gain exposure at the national and international levels.
The minister has urged all physical education professionals to register on the NSRS portal. He has also asked for a Physical Education Teachers Association campaign at the district level along with structured registration at the district and state and national levels. He stressed that the initiative should move forward in mission mode and not remain just another module launch. In his words this must become a true mission to develop sports in the country.
Science Led Search for Young Talent
Dr Mandaviya highlighted that talent identification must follow a scientific approach that begins at the grassroots. He explained that many youngsters already have the right physical attributes to become good athletes if they receive proper guidance at the right time. Since physical education teachers spend the most time with children they are best placed to spot such hidden potential early.
He also underlined the growing role of sports science across the entire sporting pathway. Sports science now supports everything from spotting raw talent to shaping and training elite athletes. The launch event was attended by senior officials from the Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India along with representatives of LNIPE and LNCPE and the Physical Education Foundation of India. With this module India hopes to build a strong bridge between school playgrounds and podium finishes in the years ahead.
