The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) has used a different format for a midterm exam. Students taking a Generative AI course were asked to build their own AI chatbots and use them to answer exam questions.
The assessment was conducted during the June-July 2026 term. 78 MBA students from Business Analytics and general MBA elective cohorts took part in the exercise.
No Written Test For This Midterm
For this particular assessment, students did not take a conventional pen-and-paper test. Instead, they had to create and prepare a chatbot that could answer the questions given in the exam.
The students had to write prompts to guide their chatbots and provide course material and other relevant information for the chatbot to use. They could test different versions before selecting one for the final assessment.
The exam included 15 questions. The idea was to check how well students could use Generative AI rather than only asking them to remember information and write answers themselves.
Professor Developed The AI Platform
The assessment was designed by Professor Subhabrata Majumdar from IIM Bangalore’s Decision Sciences area. He developed a separate platform for the exercise, which was hosted on Vercel and created with the help of AI-assisted coding tools.
Students were given individual access to the platform and could experiment with their chatbots before submitting their final version.
The platform was designed so that students could work with the course material while building their chatbot. The format also allowed students without a strong coding background to participate.
AI Did Not Grade The Students
Although the students used AI to produce their answers, the evaluation was not left entirely to the chatbot.
A teaching assistant evaluated the final responses, similar to the checking process in a regular exam. This meant the students were assessed on how effectively they prepared and used their chatbots, while the final output still went through human evaluation.
