AIIMS Nagpur Protest: Resident Doctors Resume Work After Police Assure Better Security
AIIMS Nagpur resident doctors have called off their protest after police assured enhanced security at the hospital and strict action against those accused of assaulting a doctor.
Resident doctors at AIIMS Nagpur have called off their protest after receiving assurances from the hospital administration and Nagpur Police regarding enhanced security at the institute. The protest was held following the alleged assault of a resident doctor inside the hospital's ICU earlier this week.
The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA), AIIMS Nagpur, met Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil and senior police officials on Friday. During the meeting, the police assured the doctors that security arrangements at the hospital would be strengthened and stringent action would be taken against those allegedly involved in the incident.
AIIMS Nagpur Doctors Protest Called Off
The RDA decided to withdraw its protest after discussions with the hospital administration and police authorities. AIIMS Nagpur said in a statement that the administration strongly condemned violence against doctors and healthcare workers.
The institute also assured the protesting doctors that it would undertake the necessary legal and police proceedings related to the incident. The administration further stated that no resident doctor or student would face victimisation or harassment for participating in the protest.
AIIMS Nagpur Doctor Allegedly Attacked Inside ICU
The protest followed an alleged assault on a resident doctor inside the ICU at AIIMS Nagpur on Tuesday. According to reports, the doctor was allegedly attacked by four people following the death of a relative during treatment at the hospital.
The incident prompted resident doctors to stage a demonstration on Thursday, demanding stronger measures to ensure the safety of medical professionals.
A police case has been registered under provisions of the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act.
AIIMS Nagpur Doctors Demand No Special Treatment Policy
During their protest, resident doctors also raised concerns about what they described as a “VIP culture” in hospitals. The RDA called for a no special treatment policy, stating that patients and their relatives should be treated according to established procedures without external influence.
The doctors had also demanded that the institute itself initiate complaints in cases involving violence against doctors and healthcare workers.
Police Assure Enhanced Security at AIIMS Nagpur
Following the meeting between the RDA, AIIMS officials and senior police officers, the Nagpur Police Commissioner assured resident doctors that security at the hospital would be increased.
Police also assured the doctors that stringent action would be taken against those responsible for Tuesday's alleged assault. Following these assurances, the RDA called off its protest.
