The Central Board of Secondary Education is once again in the news, but this time for a music video. The board conducted its Class 12 Maths exam on March 9, 2026. Since the exams concluded, students have reported a mishap in the question paper QR code.
According to reports, the QR code printed on the CBSE class 12 Maths Question paper directed students to a viral music video from 1987 by singer Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up.
The question paper QR codes are included for verification purposes or to provide students with exam related information. Students however claimed that the CBSE Class 12 maths paper QR code redirected them to the music video. The song is famous as a long running internet prank known as ‘Rickrolling’ where people are tricked into opening the video under the impression that it leads to something important.
Students took to social media sharing videos of scanning the QR code from their homes leading to the viral music video. While some found this amusing others have questioned how such a link could appear on an official examination document. Users pointed out at the seriousness of the issue asking for a clarification.
CBSE Issues Official Statement
The board has issued an official press release regarding the question paper QR code. According to the press release issued, the board has stated that many security features are provided on the Question Papers which include QR codes to verufy genuineness of the question paper in case of a suspected security breach.
The board in its notification clarified that a few question papers of the Class 12 Maths exams conducted on March 9, 2026 when the QR code is scanned it links to a YouTube cideo raising concerns about the veracity of the question papers among students and parents.
The board has confirmed that the question papers are genuine and the security of the question papers rmain uncompromised. The board has further added that while the concern about the veracity of the question papers is put to rest, the matter has been viewed seriously and necessary steps are being taken by the Board to ensure that such issues are not repeated in future
