The Hurun Global Rich List 2026, released by the Hurun Research Institute, presents a powerful snapshot of global wealth and the individuals shaping the modern economy. Based on data as of 15 January 2026, this year’s report marks the 15th edition of the ranking and highlights a historic surge in billionaire wealth worldwide.

However, in 2026, the global population of billionaires reached a historical peak, and the number of billionaires made it to 4,020, marking the first time in the world that the total count of billionaires had surpassed 4,000.

This is a growth of 578 billionaires over a period of one year. Interestingly, there were 2 new billionaires every day that created a new world record.

The Chairman and Chief Researcher of the Hurun Report, Rupert Hoogewerf, remarked that, “The Hurun Global Rich List tells the story of the global economy, through the stories of the most successful entrepreneurs on the planet. I hope this list can inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs.”

China led the growth, contributing 318 new entrants, followed by strong additions from the United States and other major economies. 

However, India has also emerged as the world's richest country, with 308 billionaires living here, and Mukesh Ambani of RELIANCE is the richest person in Asia, according to the Hurun Global Rich List 2026.

The rapid expansion reflects a dynamic shift in global wealth creation, driven largely by technology, industrial growth, and financial markets.

At the top of the list, Elon Musk retained his position as the world’s richest person for the fifth time in six years, with a staggering net worth of US$792 billion. His wealth surged due to the rising valuations of SpaceX and Tesla.

The Chairman and Chief Researcher of the Hurun Report, Rupert Hoogewerf, said that, “Elon Musk has had an outstanding year, adding just under US$500bn since leaving DOGE, and quadrupling his fortune in just five years. Nobody has ever created wealth at that speed. Musk’s wealth is mainly from aerospace giant SpaceX, valued at US$1.2 trillion, and Tesla’s US$1.5 trillion valuation.”

Jeff Bezos secured the second position with US$300 billion, supported by Amazon’s dominance in cloud computing and artificial intelligence. For the first time, Larry Page entered the top three, reflecting the rapid growth of Alphabet driven by AI innovation.

Other notable names include Jensen Huang, who entered the top 10 due to Nvidia’s massive growth in AI infrastructure, and Bernard Arnault, who remained Europe’s richest individual.

Artificial Intelligence emerged as the biggest driver of new wealth in 2026. A total of 114 billionaires are now linked to AI companies, with 46 new entrants in this sector alone. The AI revolution has significantly shifted wealth creation toward those controlling data, computing power, and digital platforms.

Beyond AI, industries such as financial services, healthcare, industrial products, and green energy also played key roles in generating new billionaires. At the same time, traditional sectors like SaaS faced challenges, highlighting a changing economic landscape.

China reclaimed its position as the world’s billionaire capital with 1,110 billionaires, followed by the United States with 1,000. India ranked third with 308 billionaires, continuing its steady growth.

India’s wealth story is particularly impressive, with over 80% of its billionaires being new compared to a decade ago. Key sectors driving growth include automobiles, financial services, food and beverages, and healthcare.

As per the Chairman and Chief Researcher of the Hurun Report, Rupert Hoogewerf, “India's billionaire story is bigger than the 308 names on Indian soil. Over 80% of this year’s India billionaires were not on the list ten years ago, showing how India’s wealth creation has changed completely. Add roughly 50 India billionaires living predominantly in the USA and the UAE, and the total number of India billionaires is just shy of 360, with combined wealth of US$1.5 trillion.”

The 2026 list reflects how wealth creation has evolved dramatically. Around 69% of billionaires are self-made, showing the growing importance of entrepreneurship. The average age of billionaires is 65, but a rising number of young entrepreneurs—especially in tech and AI—are entering the list.
