Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi on September 17, which also happens to be his birthday, to mark the opening of a three-day conference and exhibition focused on India's growing semiconductor and electronics ecosystem. The event is being conducted from September 17 to 19 under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”.
Over 600 Companies to Participate
SEMICON India 2026 has united over 600 companies and representatives from 52 countries. The event is slated to attract around 50,000 visitors, with participation from more than 400 executives and over 150 speakers.
The event includes country pavilions from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden, along with state pavilions, a Startup Pavilion, Innovation Showcase, Student Hackathon and Workforce Development Pavilion.
From Silicon to Complete Systems
The primary focus of SEMICON India 2026 is the semiconductor value chain, ranging from raw materials and manufacturing equipment to chip design, fabrication, advanced packaging, electronics and finished systems.
A new “Sand to Silicon to Systems” Value Chain Experience has been included to showcase the various phases of the semiconductor ecosystem. The conference will also showcase discussions on display technology, advanced packaging, equipment manufacturing, research and workforce development.
Focus on Investment, Innovation and Skills
PM Modi highlighted that the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 has an expanded outlay of $13.5 billion, compared with $8 billion in the first phase.
Currently, 12 chip-making projects have been approved, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the number is slated to rise further under the next phase, with three already having started commercial production.
The event gave a platform for semiconductor companies, policymakers, investors, researchers, startups, academic institutions and students. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the conference is organised to enable collaboration, investment, innovation and talent development in India’s semiconductor sector.
Country roundtables are also being organised to fuel international collaboration and potential joint ventures. Other sessions include a women’s leadership forum, startup pitching and workforce-development initiatives.
Inside India’s Semiconductor Push
SEMICON India 2026 comes as India forwards a bid to develop domestic semiconductor manufacturing and lower dependence on overseas supply chains. The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is promoting the undertaking of semiconductor manufacturing, packaging and related powers under the government's semiconductor programme.
The earlier growth of the sector has spanned across approved projects covering various parts of the semiconductor value chain. The government has cemented the initiative as part of its wider bid to establish India as a partner in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
With the 2026 edition uniting global companies and delegations from semiconductor industry, the three-day event will focus on igniting and expanding potential across India's semiconductor and electronics value chain.
