Southern Railway Achieves 100% Electrification

Southern Railway has made history by becoming the first railway in India to become fully electrified with 100% electrification of its total route length of 5,068 kilometers of BG track. The last step in this endeavor was taken with the completion of a statutory inspection for the electrification of the 71 km Pattukkottai-Karaikkudi section. It is located in Tamil Nadu on the 9th of September in 2020.

Southern Railway has taken a giant leap forward in the direction of the Indian Railways’ goal to become carbon neutral and modernize the network.

Completion of the Final Stretch: Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi

Completion of the task of 100 % electrification was achieved with the energizing of the 71-kilometer stretch between Pattukkottai and Karaikkudi in Tamil Nadu. Once the overhead equipment (OHE) was installed and the structures were tested, the final statutory inspection was done by Shri Ganesh,  the Principal Chief Electrical Engineer of Southern Railway.

The successful inspection of this segment marked the completion of Southern Railway's all broad gauge routes using 25 kV AC traction.

Operational Advantages of Complete Electrification

The adoption of a complete electrified broad gauge network brings numerous benefits for both passenger and freight transportation in the region.

  • No More Traction Switches: The process of switching from diesel to electric engines at junction stations that causes delays in rail operations will become unnecessary.

  • Higher Punctuality/Speed: Electric locomotives are faster in terms of accelerating and decelerating, which helps reduce travel time in main passenger routes.

  • More Efficient Usage of Locomotives: Locomotive turnaround times will be reduced significantly, allowing for more efficient use of the fleet for both passenger and freight services.

  • Environmental Advantages: By replacing diesel traction with electricity, the emissions of carbon and reliance on imported fossil fuels will decrease.Creating synergies through full electrification.

  • History of Southern Railway's Electrification (1931–2026)

Southern Railway Zone has been embracing electric power for close to 100 years.

    • May 11, 1931: Electric power was adopted by the railway in Madras which became the second city in India, after Bombay to use electric railway lines.
    • 1968: The line from Madras Beach to Tambaram was converted to using 25kv AC electric power which set guidelines for the electrification processes in Indian Railways.
    • September 2026: The completed stretch of Pattukkottai to Karaikkudi achieved full electrification of all its routes.

The Southern Railway's 5,068 kilometers of Broad Gauge network has now become fully electrified and this marks the completion of a 95-year long journey towards a sustainable development. The completion of the last segment between Pattukkottai and Karaikkudi completely removes the need to change traction from one engine to another, thereby speeding up train movement and drastically lowering carbon emissions.

This achievement marks a huge step towards progress in modernizing regional connectivity while supporting the vision for a zero-carbon railway network in India.
