US President Donald Trump has recently backed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), stating that the United States backs the project amid disruptions to commercial shipping and energy infrastructure owing to the West Asia war. US President Donald Trump made the remarks during a meeting with Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Trump said: “Iran's terrorist attacks on commercial shipping in neighbouring countries have shown the need to shift Middle East energy infrastructure away from the Iranian checkpoints.” He added, “That is why my administration strongly supports the India-Middle East Economic Corridor and other places to get oil out, whether it is a pipeline or anything else. Together we are on the verge of overcoming challenges that have plagued this region for a decade.”
What is IMEC?
IMEC is a multinational connectivity and infrastructure network connecting India, the Gulf and Europe, which was unveiled at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023 by India, the US, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and European countries.
The project has two primary features: an eastern corridor linking India with the Gulf and a northern corridor connecting the Gulf with Europe. Its proposal ambit encompasses rail and maritime links, alongside electricity and digital cables and infrastructure for clean-hydrogen transport.
Why is Trump Backing IMEC Amid West Asia War?

The remarks put IMEC in the debate over alternative trade and energy routes as conflict and instability impact West Asian connectivity. The corridor aims to provide additional multimodal links between India, the Middle East and Europe rather than fully depending on present maritime routes.
What does IMEC signify for India?
For India, the IMEC plan is constructed to bolster connectivity with Gulf markets and provide an integrated route towards Europe. The proposed railway network would link the country with maritime transport, thus establishing a ship-to-rail system intended to boost the movement of goods.
The project could also promote economic links through planned energy and digital infrastructure. The Middle East Institute has predicted that an operational corridor could possibly reduce shipping times by up to 40%, although the eventual result would depend on infrastructure development, route and operating conditions.
The IMEC, once operational, provides Indian exporters an alternative route to reach European markets. The combination of sea and rail connectivity will enable the movement of goods more efficiently than relying on existing maritime routes.
The Current Status of IMEC Project
IMEC was formally launched through a memorandum of understanding in 2023. India and the UAE later linked an intergovernmental framework agreement in February 2024 to include cooperation on the corridor’s logistics platform and digital ecosystem.
However, the project faces constraints like geopolitical and implementation roadblocks. The Gaza conflict and broader regional tensions have complicated the proposed route, while construction necessitates coordination among several governments and infrastructure systems.
Why is IMEC important?
IMEC combines trade, transport, energy and digital connectivity across three regions. Its development is being deliberated alongside doubts over supply-chain resilience and vulnerable maritime chokepoints.
Although Trump’s latest statement reiterates US political support for the project, IMEC’s culmination will depend on security issues, financing, cross-border coordination and the development and integration of the infrastructure needed to make the proposed corridor functional.
