Cambridge University Announces New Institute To Study Brain Health Across Lifespan
The University of Cambridge has announced the Cambridge Mind and Brain Institute to study brain health across the lifespan, including the effects of digital lifestyles, climate change, illnesses and other factors.
The University of Cambridge has announced the Cambridge Mind and Brain Institute, a new research centre focused on understanding and improving brain health from early childhood to old age.
The institute will bring together researchers from different parts of the university and work with patients, carers, practitioners, policymakers and innovators. It will examine cognitive and emotional difficulties and explore factors that may influence brain health throughout life.
What Will Cambridge’s New Institute Study?
According to the university, brain health can be affected by several factors, including digital lifestyles, diet, physical inactivity, illnesses, climate change, conflicts and social cohesion.
Researchers will seek to understand how these factors influence cognitive and emotional wellbeing and why their effects can differ from one person to another. The university said that a better understanding of these links could contribute to improving approaches to conditions affecting the brain and mind.
The institute will provide researchers with access to advanced neuroimaging and brain stimulation facilities. It will also offer technical expertise, research-method support and scientific computing facilities. These resources will be available to researchers across the wider academic community.
New Postgraduate Programmes
The Cambridge Mind and Brain Institute will also focus on training postgraduate students and researchers through research degrees, taught programmes, short courses and workshops.
The university said its first cohorts of postgraduate students and researchers will join the new MPhil in NeuroAI and Intelligent Systems and the existing MPhil in Cognitive Neurosciences.
The programmes are designed to provide training in current research areas and techniques in cognitive neuroscience.
When Will The Institute Launch?
The institute has been announced ahead of its official launch in April 2027. It has been founded by Cambridge’s Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry and will build on expertise developed through the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit.
The institute also plans to organise academic events, lectures, research workshops and public engagement activities. These initiatives are intended to encourage wider participation in brain and mind research.
University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice said the institute would bring together research expertise, facilities and the experiences of patients and partners to improve understanding and support for people experiencing cognitive and emotional difficulties.
