Australian cricketing legend Steve Smith has officially bid farewell from One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The amazing middle-order batter played his final ODI match in the Champions Trophy semifinal against India in Dubai on March 4 2025, where he was Australia's top scorer with a determined 73 runs. However, the team still lost to India.
In a statement according to Cricket Australia, Steve Smith stated: "It feels like the right time to make way. It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.”
“Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way. Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage" he adds.
At the age of 35, Smith leaves behind an impressive ODI career spanning 170 matches, during which he amassed 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96. His tally includes 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries, making him the 12th highest run-scorer for Australia in ODI history. His highest individual score in the format was a remarkable 164 runs, achieved against New Zealand in 2016.
Smith's cricketing journey began in Sydney, where he showcased exceptional talent from a young age. Over the years, he has evolved into a major player for Australian cricket.
