In a major push for digital independence amid tightening US tech restrictions, IIT Bombay has officially launched BharatGen. The sovereign, multilingual generative AI ecosystem natively supports 22 Indian languages, ensuring strict data localization and cultural preservation.

IIT Bombay has officially launched BharatGen, a revolutionary sovereign multilingual AI ecosystem created specifically to counter recent US restrictions on global platforms. This milestone comes as India’s aggressive and strategic pivot towards complete technological self-reliance was unveiled at the high-profile Bharat Innovates 2026 summit in Nice, France. 

Built to process, understand, and create content natively in 22 scheduled Indian languages, the central generative system is powered by the Central Government’s ₹10,000 crore IndiaAI Mission. The platform creates a highly secure framework for domestic data localization by moving away from the Western-centric APIs, providing customized digital solutions for everyday citizens, public administrations, and local enterprises alike.

What Makes BharatGen India’s Unique Sovereign AI?

Unlike generic commercial models built primarily using English datasets, the platform engineered by the IIT Bombay-led consortium acts natively on regional roots.
