For the Asian Games 2026 gold medal and Boxer Lovlina Borgohain a gold in Nagoya was more than an advancement from her silver at the earlier edition. It reflected the culmination of a tumultuous moments in a 15-year boxing career that has included an Olympic medal, injuries, poverty and family struggles, changes in weight category and the mental roadblocks after the Paris Olympics.

Despite this, Borgohain managed to churn out a brilliant performance in the women’s 75kg final in Nishio, Japan, by defeating China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 on October 2, her 29th birthday. The victory made her only the second Indian woman boxer, after MC Mary Kom’s triumph in 2014, to clinch an Asian Games gold medal.

Hangzhou Silver to Nagoya Gold: Lovlina Borgohain’s Sports Milestones

Borgohain had secured silver in the 75kg category at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games after losing the final to China’s Li Qian. Returning to the Asian Games four years later, she was committed to reverse the colour of her medal.

However, her route to the podium was not smooth. She started with a 5-0 quarter-final victory over South Korea’s Seong Su-yeon before edging Kazakhstan’s reigning 70kg world champion Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in a nail-bitting contest in semi-final. She then defeated Bao Ziyi 5-0 in the final.

The gold also bolstered Borgohain’s unique link with Japan. At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, she won a bronze medal, a breakthrough that proved momentous her international innings. Returning to Japan for the Nagoya Games, she said the country had a special importance for her because of the Tokyo stint.

Borgohain’s Challenges on Road to Sports Victory

Borgohain’s victory trail after Tokyo was marked by difficult periods. Injuries, changes in form and the disappointment of the Paris 2024 Olympics challenged her mentally. She has said that she had even considered leaving boxing after returning from Paris without a medal.

The boxer regarded a shift in mindset for helping her rebuild. Instead of pressurising over results, she focused on enjoying her matches and accepting whatever result followed.

For Borgohain, the primary goal was sustaining self-belief even during hurdles. She has regarded sport as a “game of the mind” and said difficult situations can become manageable depending on how an athlete approaches them, in an exclusive interview with the Times of india upon returning after Asian Games gold.

World Championships Qualification

The Nagoya victory has also fetched Borgohain qualification for the World Championships, providing her another chance to compete at the highest level. She believes the growing confidence of India’s younger boxers is contributing to powerful results for the country.

Thus, her Asian Games gold is both a personal milestone and another leap in Indian women’s boxing.

Boxer’s Early Life, Family and Personal Struggles

Lovlina Borgohain grew up in Baromukhia village in Assam’s Golaghat district, where restricted infrastructure and financial hardship shaped her early years. Her father, Tiken Borgohain, worked at a local tea estate, while the family also relied on paddy farming. Her parents struggled to support Lovlina and her twin sisters’ sporting dreams, with her mother reportedly taking loans to fund their training. Lovlina initially trained in Muay Thai and kickboxing before being selected by SAI coach Padam Boro in 2012 and taking up boxing. She later moved to Guwahati for training, beginning a journey that eventually took her to the Olympic podium.
