One of the most famous burger outlets has been Wendy’s, and above that, it is best known for its special hamburger. It was founded by Dave Thomas on November 15, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio.
According to the monologues in the archive, it began as a single restaurant and soon grew into a major fast-food brand across the US and international markets. Amid a lot of competition, Wendy’s had a new idea that caught the attention.
Wendy’s became known and famous for its square-shaped burger, fresh beef and the idea of “not cutting corners” on quality. The restaurant was named after Thomas’s daughter, Melinda Lou “Wendy” Thomas. Her childhood name became the brand’s identity.
In today’s time, Wendy’s company is a publicly listed company on Nasdaq under the ticker WEN.

Who Is Dave Thomas?
Dave Thomas, who was the founder of Wendy’s and has engraved his name in the list of prominent global businessmen. He changed the look of a mainstream food shape and made it his unique selling point. He turned his childhood dream of running a restaurant, and then turned it into a globally famous fast-food brand.
Dave was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and while growing up, he developed an interest in business. His love for business started at a very young age. He began his career by working at a restaurant. Later, he joined another famous food chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). There, he helped improve the struggling outlets. This gave him valuable experience in how to run a growing food business.
After Dave completed his time at KFC, he was experienced enough to open his own chain. Thomas then decided to build a restaurant around his own ideas of food and customer service.
After he was all sure about his plan, in 1969, Dave Thomas opened his first Wendy’s restaurant in Columbus, Ohio.
Why Did Dave Thomas Create Square Burgers For Wendy's?
The unique selling point of Wendy’s on the ladder of becoming famous was a ‘square burger’. These square burgers became Wendy’s most recognisable feature. It’s a square hamburger patty, it came as an idea inspired by Kewpee Hamburgers, a restaurant from Thomas’s childhood.
If you thought this was a generic square burger, you are wrong. This was not just a visual twist, but the patties extended beyond the edges of the bun. This gave the customer a clear view of the meat.
This distinctive design became a part of the restaurant and a part of the brand philosophy as well. It supported its promise of serving quality food without ‘cutting the corners’.
