    What is the History of the Indian Air Force?

    The Indian Air Force was established on October 8, 1932, during British rule in India.

    No. 1 Squadron was the first operational squadron, which was formed in 1933. This force was gradually expanded with its role and capabilities in the following decades.

    After the India got an independence in 1947, the Indian Air Force becomes the important  part in the defence system for the national security of India, which plays an important role in 1947–48 Jammu and Kashmir operations, the 1965 and 1971 wars and the Kargil conflict.

    The force has continued to modernise with fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, helicopters, air-defence systems, surveillance platforms and other technologies.

    According to the Ministry of Defence, the multinational exercise is being conducted from September 26 to October 12, 2026, with its operational phase at Air Force Station Jodhpur. Its theme is “Power in Partnership.” 

    The exercise brings the IAF together with air forces from several friendly foreign countries.

    The exercise focuses not only on flying operations but also on professional interaction, aerospace safety, operational procedures and cultural exchange.

    For the Indian Air Force, it is also an opportunity to demonstrate its operational capabilities and India's growing aerospace and defence ecosystem. 

    Suryakiran Aerobatic Team

    The Suryakiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) is one of the most recognisable demonstration teams of the Indian Air Force.

    The team was formed in 1996 at Bidar and is known for its highly coordinated aerial formations and precision flying.

    In 2026, Suryakiran completed 30 years. The team has conducted more than 800 air displays in India and abroad during its three-decade journey. It currently flies Hawk Mk-132 aircraft. 

    The team is more than an attraction at air shows. Its performances demonstrate qualities such as:

    • Coordination

    The Suryakiran team also helps create interest among young people in careers in the armed forces. A recent IAF display in Meerut attracted more than one lakh spectators, including students, NCC cadets and NSS volunteers.
