To mark its importance, World Post Day is celebrated across the world on October 9 every year. Even in the age of globalization and modern technology, postal services remain an important part of our day-to-day lives.
In this article, we will explore the history, theme and significance of World Post Day.
What is the Theme of World Post Day 2026?
The official theme for World Post Day 2026 is “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities”. This year’s theme highlights how the global postal network connects people, businesses and communities.
It also focuses on the role of postal services in delivering essential services and creating opportunities around the world.
What is the History of World Post Day?
In 1874, 22 countries signed the Treaty of Bern, which led to the creation of the General Postal Union. Later, in 1878, its name was changed to the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
The main aim of the treaty was to create a unified postal territory among member countries with common rules and standardised international postage rates.
Earlier, postal services between countries operated through complex separate treaties and agreements, making international mail exchange difficult.
India joined the Universal Postal Union in1876, under British rule.
In 1969, the UPU Congress held in Tokyo declared October 9 as World Post Day. The proposal was made by the Indian delegation and is usually credited to Anand Mohan Narula.
