World Space Week 2026 Marks Rocket Revolution: Check Theme, History, Countries that Have Sent Humans to Space

Human space exploration is ushering in a new phase. NASA’s Artemis II mission flew around the Moon in April 2026, while future Artemis missions are aimed at sending astronauts to the lunar surface. China is aiming a crewed lunar landing around 2030.

World Space Week is being celebrated from October 4 to 10, 2026, marking modernisation in space science, technology and human exploration. This year’s theme, “Rocket Revolution,” focuses on the transformation of space launches as reusable rockets, private companies, startups and new space powers expand access to orbit. The United Nations has marked World Space Week since 1999. It underscores reusable rockets, lower launch costs and fresh opportunities for space exploration.

Why Is World Space Week Observed?

The dates celebrate two major leaps in space history. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth, marking the start of the Space Age. The satellite was the first artificial object to orbit Earth. While, October 10 marks the 1967 entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty, which found principles controlling the peaceful exploration and use of outer space.

World Space Week was declared by the UN General Assembly in 1999 to emphasise the contribution of space science and technology to human welfare and motivate education and global cooperation.

How Many People, Countries Have Travelled To Space?

According to an Al Jazeera analysis utilising the 100-km Karman line as the benchmark, at least 746 people from 52 countries have travelled to space. The figure includes professional astronauts as well as paying space tourists. Some travellers also own dual nationalities or represent countries that no longer exist, such as the Soviet Union.

The United States is ahead with 369 people sent to space, while the Soviet Union and Russia together account for 138. China, which became the third country to individually send humans into space, has sent 29 people.

Why Women Still A Minority In Space

Women make for only 112 of the 746 space travellers, or about 15 per cent. Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space in June 1963, while American astronaut Sally Ride was the first US woman in space in 1983.

Commercial spaceflight has triggered the latest increase in female space travellers, with numerous women flying as private passengers.

India Looking to Make Strides in Human Spaceflight

Human space exploration is ushering in a new phase. NASA’s Artemis II mission flew around the Moon in April 2026, while future Artemis missions are aimed at sending astronauts to the lunar surface. China is aiming a crewed lunar landing around 2030.

Meanwhile, India is also staring at its maiden crewed Gaganyaan mission, presently planned for 2027. If successful, India would become the fourth country to separately send humans into space.

Thus, the 2026 theme features an evolving space sector where access is being shaped by modern launch technologies, commercial participation and numerous national space programmes.
