Delhi to get a one-of-its-kind Skills University soon, confirms CM Kejriwal

Delhi Skills and Entrepreneurship University soon: According to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi is all set to get one of its kind Skills University soon. Delhi Cabinet gave its approval to setting up of a Delhi Skills and Entrepreneurship University in the national capital. The university will he launched with an initial intake capacity of 50,000 students who will be trained in the various skills that are in demand in the industry.

Why Skill University in Delhi?

Along with announcing setting up of Delhi Skills University, CM Kejriwal also outlined the goals and objectives that the government plans to fulfil through it. The key among them are:

• To provide employment to youth
• Enhance Skills of youth in sync with the market demand
• To put emphasis on Skill Development from schooling to college

Skills University Bill Before Lt Governor

Following the approval of Delhi Cabinet, the Bill to setup Delhi Skills and Entrepreneurship University will be put before Delhi Lieutenant Governor. After the approval of Governor, the Bill will be present in Delhi Assembly. Delhi CM hoped that within an year of approval of Lt Governor, the University will be setup and ready to induct students.

85% Reservation for Delhiites

While announcing the decision to setup Delhi Skills and Entrepreneurship University, CM also said that the varsity will have 85 per cent reservation for the Delhi voters in the university, as per media report. He further added that with such provision, Delhi Government plans to ensure employability of the students and produce young entrepreneurs and open employment opportunities for the young individuals.

Key Highlights

Some of the important highlights related to Skills University to be setup in Delhi are as follows:

• Delhi Skills and Entrepreneurship University will have its headquarters at Delhi Institute of Tool Engineering based in Okhla.
• All existing ITIs, Polytehnic Colleges and World Skills Centres would be merged with the University.
• Different courses are planned as part of the university which will be available to the students at different academic life stages i.e. after Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation
• Higher Education Programmes such M.Phil and PhD will also be offered by the varsity
• An expert committee will be setup to for Course Design and Curriculum for the Skills University Programmes
• Exchange Programmes with Foreign Skills Institutes and Universities as well as Industry partnerships planned to offer exposure to the students

University Setup Based on Global Model

Addressing the media, Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia said that the model for Delhi Skills University has been evolved after studying several similar global institutions based in Finland, Brazil, Germany and Australia. He further added that based on the global model, Delhi Skills University will address two necessary aspects i.e. making skill education part of formal training and research component required to enhance skill learning.
