Artificial Intelligence is increasingly becoming an important skill across education and careers. Students do not necessarily have to wait until college to start understanding AI, with several free online programmes now available for school students and young learners.

For students in Classes 9 to 12, these courses can provide an early introduction to Artificial Intelligence, generative AI, prompt engineering and responsible use of AI tools. Some programmes also offer certificates or completion badges, making them useful additions to a student’s learning profile.

Here are some free AI learning options students can explore before college.

1. YUVA AI for ALL

The Government of India’s YUVA AI for ALL is one of the key free AI literacy programmes available to students and young learners. Launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under the IndiaAI Mission, the course is designed to introduce learners to the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence.

The course is 4.5 hours long and self-paced. It covers what AI is and how it works, its impact on education, creativity and work, responsible use of AI tools, real-world applications and future opportunities. Students who successfully complete the course receive an official Government of India certificate.

The programme is available through platforms including FutureSkills Prime, iGOT Karmayogi and DIKSHA. The government said that enrolment had crossed 85.27 lakh as of July 8, 2026, showing the scale of interest in the programme.

Why should school students learn AI?

Starting AI learning in Classes 9 to 12 does not mean students need to become programmers immediately. Basic AI literacy can help students understand how technologies they already use work and how to use AI tools more effectively and responsibly.

For students planning careers in engineering, computer science, data science, design, finance, research and other technology-driven fields, early exposure can also help them understand which areas interest them before choosing a college course.

With free programmes available from the government and major technology organisations, students can begin building AI knowledge before college without paying for an expensive course.
