UPSC Exam Pattern 2026: The Union Public Service Commission conducts the CSE exam in three stages: Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Each stage plays a crucial role in the selection of the candidate. Understanding the exam pattern becomes important for the aspirants who are preparing for this exam. The CSE Prelims is scheduled for 24 May this year. UPSC Exam Pattern 2026

The UPSC conducts the CSE each year to recruit candidates for various Group A and B services. Every year, thousands of aspirants apply for this exam and a very few get selected for top administrative posts in India.

The UPSC CSE selection process consists of:

  • Stage I: Preliminary Examination (Objective)

  • Stage II: Main Examination (Descriptive)

  • Stage III: Interview / Personality Test

UPSC Exam Pattern 2026 for Prelims

The UPSC Prelims is the first stage in the selection process. The Prelims exam is a qualifying examination which means it is conducted to shortlist the candidates for further selection stages (Mains). The marks obtained in the Prelims are not counted in the preparation of the final merit list. The Prelims exam consists of two papers: Paper 1 (General Studies) and Paper 2 (CSAT). Both papers are objective in nature and consist of 100 and 80 MCQs, respectively. The time duration allotted to each paper is 2 hours.

Paper 2 is qualifying in nature, meaning the candidates have to score 33% marks in it to be eligible for Prelims merit. There is also a provision for 1/3rd negative marking in both the papers.

UPSC Exam Pattern 2026 for Mains

Candidates who will qualify the Prelims exam are eligible to appear for UPSC Mains. The Mains exam tests thorough understanding, writing skills, and analytical abilities of the candidates. The Mains examination is descriptive in nature and consists of 9 papers- two qualifying language papers, four General Studies papers, and two optional papers. The exam is conducted in offline mode. The qualifying paper marks are not counted in the final merit list.

UPSC Prelims Marking Scheme

Having a knowledge of marking scheme is also important as it will help you analyse the marks you are getting in the mock tests. It will also help in avoiding the penalties.

  • Each correct answer fetches +2 marks in Paper 1 and +2.5 marks in Paper 2.

  • The wrong answers will be treated with ⅓ rd negative marking.

  • There is no penalty for unattended questions.

  • Penalty will be given for multiple answers to a question.
