The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing for the oath-taking ceremony of Delhi's new Chief Minister, which is expected to be held on February 20 at Ramlila Maidan. This event follows the BJP's victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, where they secured 48 out of 70 seats, ending the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) decade-long rule.

Key Details of the Oath-Taking Ceremony

  • Date and Time: The announcement of the new Delhi Chief Minister will take place on 19th february. The swearing-in ceremony is reportedly scheduled for February 20 at 4:30 pm.
  • Venue: Ramlila Maidan is among the venues being considered for the oath-taking ceremony of the new cabinet. Other potential venues include the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and locations along the banks of the Yamuna river.
  • Attendees: The event is expected to be a grand affair with an anticipated audience of 12,000 to 16,000 Delhi residents, as well as diplomats from various nations, religious figures, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers, leaders from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Union Ministers, corporate industrialists, and personalities from the film and sports sectors, and saints and sages.
  • Preparations: BJP General Secretaries Vinod Tawde and Tarun Chugh have been appointed as the in-charge officials to manage the preparations for the ceremony.

Selection of the Chief Minister

  • Legislative Party Meeting: The BJP Legislative Party meeting in Delhi has been scheduled for February 19. The meeting was originally planned for February 17 but was postponed.
  • Potential Candidates: Several candidates are being considered for the Chief Minister role.
  • Parvesh Verma, who gained prominence after defeating AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, is a leading contender. He has a strong support base among the Jat community.
  • Satish Upadhyay, who has previously served as the Delhi BJP president and led the Delhi Youth Wing, is another strong candidate.
  • Ashish Sood, representing the Punjabi community within the BJP in Delhi, is also in the running.

Other potential candidates include Jitendra Mahajan and Vijender Gupta.

If the party decides to nominate a female leader, former Delhi Mayor and first-time MLA Rekha Gupta could be a viable option. Other female MLAs include Neelam Pahalwan, Poonam Sharma, and Shikha Roy.

Dark Horse: Many within the party speculate that the BJP leadership might opt for a lesser-known candidate or a "dark horse" among the newly elected MLAs, as seen in Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.

Election Results and Aftermath

The BJP's victory in the Delhi Assembly elections marked the end of the AAP's ten-year reign in the capital. The BJP won 48 of Delhi's 70 seats, while the AAP was confined to just 22. Key figures from AAP, such as Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Satyendra Jain, faced defeat in their respective constituencies.

There is an ongoing discussion about appointing a Deputy Chief Minister along with the Chief Minister, considering caste and social equations. There can be a cabinet of seven ministers including the Chief Minister. Besides, two MLAs will also be appointed in the posts of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Chief Whip, Deputy Whip, Delhi Jal Board, Women's Commission, DDA.
