In her historic 8th Union Budget address on Saturday (February 1, 2025), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana, often known as the developing agri-districts initiative.
The initiative is inspired by the Aspirational Districts Program, which was started in 2018 with the goal of "quickly and effectively transforming 112 of the country's most under-developed districts."
What is PM Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana?
PM Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana is an ambitious district program run by the central government to increase irrigation and make the land fertile by providing quality seeds and fertilizers to farmers. PM Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana covers infertile, barren and undeveloped agricultural land to increase cultivation and provide assistance to farmers.
The Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana will be implemented in collaboration with the states and will integrate current programs. It will include 100 districts with below-average characteristics, moderate crop intensity, and low productivity.

Aim of PM Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Scheme
As per the announcement made by FM Sitharaman, PM Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana aims to:
- Enhance agricultural productivity
- Adopt crop diversification and sustainable agricultural practices
- Augment post-harvest storage at panchayat and block level
- Improve irrigation facilities
- Facilitate availability of long- and short-term credit
Who will Benefit from the Scheme?
The Finance Minister announced that the Dhan Dhanya scheme will be launched in low-yield areas to improve agricultural productivity. Under this scheme, 1.7 crore farmers will receive support. The scheme will be implemented in partnership with state governments.
