DRDO Successfully Conducts 3rd Multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defense Capability Flight Test

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully completed three consecutive development flight trials of Multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) which helped India achieve its historical milestone in its national security.

With this successful  flight test India joins the nations capable of intercepting and neutralizing hostile strategic weapons up to Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) ranges. The trials featured the successful maiden flight test of the indigenous Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR), expanding the nation's multi-domain operational dominance.

India’s "Multi-Layered" ballistic missile defence shield

The dual-day trials of multilayered ballistic missiles effectively validated India’s Phase-II BMD architecture designed to insulate the country from sophisticated and high-speed ballistic threats.

The multi-layered system provides multiple interception windows to destroy incoming hostile weapons at various altitudes during the operational drills, interceptors successfully tracked and destroyed targeted threats using two critical and distinct operational layers:

  • Exo-Atmospheric Interception: One interceptor missile successfully engaged its target outside Earth's atmosphere by proving its capability to neutralize incoming strategic missiles early in their terminal flight phase.

  • Endo-Atmospheric Interception: A second interceptor precisely neutralizes its target within the atmosphere by establishing a reliable failsafe layer closer to the ground.

  • These tests featured the integration of DRDO’s next-generation AD-1 and AD-2 interceptor missiles, engineered specifically to counter long-range ballistic missile systems.

Why is this specific test a major breakthrough?

India's defence shield focused heavily on short and medium-range ballistic threats prior to these tests. These latest trials successfully validated advanced interceptors engineered for Phase-II of the national BMD program, which are optimized to protect against ultra-fast and long-range weapons.

The advanced interceptor systems detected, tracked, and precisely engaged simulated targets mimicking high-velocity enemy missiles by mastering the technology required to neutralize complex long-range threats.

India enters a select tier of global military powers along with countries like the US, Russia, and Israel which are possessing fully integrated and operational-level BMD architectures.

    Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR)

The Maiden test of the NASM-MR secured India strengthened its maritime security  by expanding beyond the shield of ballistic defence. The DRDO parallelly achieved a major maritime milestone by executing the maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR)

Gives the Indian Navy stand-off anti-ship capabilities

What is the significance of flight tests?

The DRDO successfull tests elevate India into a highly elite tier of global military powers.

Phase-I of the BMD program completed in 2019 using Prithvi Defence Vehicles and Advanced Air Defence focused on countering short-to-medium-range missiles.

Phase-II pushes India's protective envelope to counter high-velocity ICBM-class platforms. This advanced shield secures critical civil assets, vital military installations and industrial hubs from sophisticated saturation strikes

These trials directly advance Mission Sudarshan Chakra India’s long-term plan to create a seamless, impenetrable aerospace shield (called a Kavach) by 2035 across the country.

By establishing a unified, multi-tiered air and missile defence future milestones under Phase-III will focus on creating the AD-AH and AD-AM interceptors to neutralize complex hypersonic weapons, highly maneuverable glide vehicles and Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs).

The successful test of the NASM-MR provides the Indian Navy with an indigenous, high-precision stand-off weapon capable of neutralizing hostile surface warships from a safe distance, reinforcing India's operational dominance and stability across the Indian Ocean Region.

The successful validation of these multi-layered technologies drew high praise from top government and defence. It emphasizes on dual capability of advanced ballistic defence and robust medium-range naval strike mechanisms significantly bolsters the nation's strategic deterrence.
