In this article, we will look at the key details of the Nobel Peace Prize 2026 winner Navi Pillay, her major achievements and her contributions to promoting human rights and international law.
Who is Navi Pillay?
South African human rights lawyer Navanethem “Navi” Pillay was born in 1941 into an Indian-origin family in Durban, South Africa. She grew up under apartheid and became one of South Africa’s first women of Indian descent to practise law. She defended anti-apartheid activists and fought against discriminatory prison conditions in the country.
After the end of apartheid, Pillay became a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she helped establish landmark legal precedents recognising rape as an act of genocide. She later served as a judge at the International Criminal Court and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
More recently, she also chaired a United Nations commission investigating human rights violations in Israel and the Palestinian territories.
